Men’s Basketball: Team USA Clinches Fifth Consecutive Gold

In a riveting gold medal game, the United States men’s basketball team emerged victorious against host country France, with a final score of 98-87. This marks Team USA’s fifth consecutive gold medal in the sport since the 2004 Games, where they earned bronze. Coach Steve Kerr praised Stephen Curry’s performance, calling it “storybook stuff.”

Gymnastics: Jordan Chiles Loses Olympic Floor Bronze

American gymnast Jordan Chiles faced a heartbreaking decision when the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) voided an appeal from her coach, Cecile Landi, which had initially vaulted Chiles from fifth to third place. The appeal, which sought to add 0.1 to Chiles’ score, was deemed to have come outside the allowed 1-minute window by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG). As a result, the initial finishing order was restored:

USA Gymnastics expressed their devastation at the ruling, while Chiles announced she would be taking time away from social media for her mental health.

Breaking: Historic Wins in Men’s Competition

History was made in the men’s breaking competition, with Canada’s B-Boy Phil Wizard (Philip Kim) securing the first and only Olympic gold in the sport. France’s B-Boy Dany Dann claimed silver, while American B-Boy Victor Montalvo earned bronze. The breaking arena at the Paris Games was a lively scene, with fans both inside and outside the stadium cheering and celebrating the performances.

Track and Field: American Dominance Continues

The U.S. track and field team continued to shine, with several outstanding performances:

  • The women’s 4×400 relay team (Shamier Little, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Gabby Thomas, and Alexis Holmes) set a new U.S. record with a time of 3:15.27, just 0.10 seconds off the world and Olympic record.
  • The men’s 4×400 relay team (Chris Bailey, Vernon Norwood, Bryce Deadmon, and Rai Benjamin) also struck gold, setting a new Olympic record with a time of 2:54.43.
  • Masai Russell secured gold in the women’s 100-meter hurdles, edging out France’s Cyréna Samba-Mayela by just 0.01 seconds with a time of 12.33 seconds.

Women’s Soccer: USWNT Reclaims Gold

The U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team (USWNT) triumphantly reclaimed the gold medal, defeating Brazil in a tense match. Goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher made a crucial save in stoppage time, helping to secure the team’s first gold medal since the 2012 London Games. Mallory Swanson scored the game’s only goal in the 60th minute. Coach Emma Hayes became the second USWNT coach to win a major tournament within 365 days of being hired.

Other Notable Victories

  • Golf: Lydia Ko of New Zealand won gold, completing her Olympic medal trifecta (silver in Rio, bronze in Tokyo). Her victory also earned her enough points for induction into the LPGA Hall of Fame.
  • Men’s Volleyball: France defeated Poland to win back-to-back gold medals, becoming the first nation to do so since the United States in 1988.
  • Climbing: Brooke Raboutou made history by becoming the first American woman to win a medal in climbing at the Olympics, securing silver in the boulder and lead final.
